How do I begin an appeal?


The first step
There are several considerations to be borne in mind: 1) If you are, were, or wish to be employed by a civil service organization (e.g., Law Enforcement, Corrections, Court System, Air Marshall Service)and seek to appeal your standing (e.g., you were rejected, suspended, demoted), then you will probably require a RELEASE OF RECORDS or RELEASE OF INFORMATION form which will allow your consulting professional (in this case, me) to receive the documents which served as the basis for your rejection, suspension, demotion, etc. That RELEASE document most often has to be notarized and sent to the organization in question with the my name and address indicated. In the case of the New York City Police Department, all rejections are accompanied by that form. 2) Sometimes (such as in the case of the NYS Court System) you can request that the records be sent to the professional directly; Other times (in the case of NYPD) the form must be sent to me and I, in turn, will send that document to the Appeals Unit with an accompanying form letter indicating that you have selected me to review your records. 3) In any case, the records are ALWAYS sent to the consulting professional, not to yourself. 4) If you are appealing to the NYPD, NYCD, or other New York City agencies falling under the domain of the New York Civil Service Commission, you must write to them WITHIN 30 DAYS (independent of me), indicating that you are appealing your case. The Commission's address and appeal instructions are contained in your original rejection notification. In any case, here it is one more time: NYC Civil Service Commission, North Municipal Bldg., One Center Street, Room 2300 North, N.Y., N.Y. 10007. Once the Commission receives your intent of appeal letter, it will instruct the appropriate appeal unit to release your records to the professional (me) who is to receive that information.
